Unemployed or precariously employed

WorkBC Skills Training for Employment

If you’re unemployed or precariously employed (unstable hours, income that doesn’t cover your needs), your local WorkBC Centre may fund tuition for third-party training directly on your behalf — up to $7,500 for eligible participants. Start by meeting a WorkBC Case Manager to build an Employment Action Plan showing how the training leads to a role in demand. This is the most common route for career changers.

Self-employed / Freelance

The B.C. Employer Training Grant — you’re the employer

Freelancers and self-employed designers can claim the ETG for themselves: you apply as the employer and name yourself as the trainee. The Province reimburses up to 80% of eligible training costs — pay $3,950 tuition and, if approved, claim back $3,160 for a net cost of $790. Your business must have been operating for at least a year, you’ll need a free Business BCeID (allow two weeks to get one), and your application must be submitted before training starts. The application takes about an hour — we’ll walk you through it.

Currently employed

The B.C. Employer Training Grant — your employer pays 20%

The Province reimburses employers 80% of training costs, up to $10,000 per employee. Your employer applies (it takes about an hour), pays tuition, and gets $3,160 back — training you for a net $790. We’ve done all the paperwork homework for them.

Newcomer pathways

Career Paths for Skilled Immigrants helps professionals use their skills and foreign qualifications to land matching jobs in B.C. — talk to a settlement agency (ISSofBC, MOSAIC, S.U.C.C.E.S.S., PICS, DIVERSEcity) about whether skills-enhancement training fits your plan. Separately, ISSofBC’s Global Talent Loans program offers low-interest loans of $1,000 to $30,000 to newcomers who completed post-secondary education outside Canada — covering tuition and course costs, accepted on a rolling basis with no deadline.
